A Senior-To-Senior Moment

Jun 12, 2008 | Commentary

A June prom unlike any other takes place 5:30 to 9 p.m., Friday, at the Stewarts Boathouse in Fairmount Park, 2601 Fairmount Blvd.

The Senior-to-Senior Prom, sponsored by parks, recreation and community services, mixes two generations — seniors, 55 years old and more, and high school seniors, 16-18 years old.

The result, said recreation supervisor Dawn Pia, is a party that promotes understanding and tears down intergenerational barriers.

"These are two demographics that steer clear of each other normally," she said.  "But once they get together for an evening of social dancing, all the preconceptions go out the window and they realize they have a lot in common."

The prom features dancing, food and both old and new music by the Milt Rasmussen Band.

Tickets cost $10 a person.
