GETTING PEOPLE TO VISIT YOUR WEBSITE
Now that you have a new website, you need people to actually visit it. This article will discuss some ways to increase website traffic.
Content is a critical aspect of traffic generation. It is important to put yourself in your visitor's shoes and ask the question: What are my visitors coming to my site for? Center your website's content around that question and make it very easy for your visitors to achieve the answer.
Today's web surfers are demanding more than just content. Interactivity and online communities are the features that keep your visitors coming back for more. MySpace is an example of this principle. Features such as chat rooms, forums and blogs are great ways to add interactivity and build a community. To keep the community fresh, it is important to regularly interact with your visitors. For example, if a visitor posts a message to your forum, it should be your goal to respond quickly.
Many websites such as www.blackvoicenews.com offer banner advertising space. This is an excellent way to increase traffic to your website while taking advantage of the established reputation and traffic generated by the website you will advertise on. In particular, www.blackvoicenews.com already has generated over 16,000 unique visitors with over 260,000 page views for the month of September as of September 25, 2006. This means your advertisement could be potentially viewed 260,000 times.
Google.com, Live.com and Yahoo.com all have paid advertisements based on keywords. If you search on any one of these search engines you will find that certain links appear at the top or along the side. These are advertisements, for which the advertisers bid on keywords, that when typed causes their advertisement to display at the top or along the side. When your advertisement is clicked, a pre-determined amount is deducted from your account.
Linking to other relevant websites and asking them to link back is called reciprocal linking. This is an effective way to drive additional traffic to your site. In addition, if the site that is linking to you is a high ranking site, your standing in search engines such as Google.com may be increased.
In the next article, I will discuss some design principles for creating your web site and creating content that keeps your visitors coming back for more.
