Garrison DailyPalm Avenue Elementary, San Bernardino City Unified School District, Grades 5th/6th. Q: Why are you interested in the study of the Underground Railroad? "I've been teaching ancient history since 1990. History is my favorite subject and, although the underground railroad took place long after the Hebrews began their Exodus, the lessons we can learn are the same. I appreciate having the opportunity to explore the slaves' escape routes and to be mroe empathetic with what they really went through. I'll be teaching a 5/6 combination class in 1999/00 so, of course, the curriculum study alone will be enriching to both me and my class. "Another interesting focus would be to see if the slaves contrived to use art from their native countries. I'd like to find evidence of this, if it's possible -- linking them to their ancient roots."
