St. Catharines has been a refuge for Black escapees for over 150 years. Harriet Tubman used the town as a center for activity, and Mary Ann Shadd opened a school for Black children here.

The BME church in St. Catharines has been around for over 150 years, and has functioned as a center for the Black community since its founding.
