British Methodist Episcopal Church, Nathaniel Dett Chapel Church-going was the center of the black refugee community in Canada; churches often functioned as meetinghouses, theaters, and gathering places. This church has been in existence since 1814 (when Niagara Falls was known as "Drummondville"), and the building was erected by former slaves in 1836. The chuch was renamed for Robert Nathaniel Dett in 1983, after a former member of the church who became a teacher, musician, and world-traveling choir master. Also at the site is the Norval Johnson Heritage Library, the namesake of a local woman responsible for keeping the church alive in leaner years. |
