| This site next to the Upper Niagara River, now a city park, was the last stop before Canada for fleeing slaves. Fugitives went from the Michigan Street Baptist Church to a hotel nearby the river. It was a very busy area, as it was the spot where people would dig out lime, for use in their outhouses. Flat-bottomed boats floated across to two settlements across to the Canadian side, Smoke Hill and Little Africa, where the slaves could blend in to the local populace. | ||||||||||||||
