An example of a ball and chain that a slave might wear -- they weighed around 40-45 pounds -- was just one of the items the group viewed at the National Underground Railroad Museum.

Period photos and artwork were some of the most impressive items. The photo below right reminds us of how black women were often stripped of their own children, only to have to nurse the children of their masters. Directly below is an illustration of the horrific conditions on a slave ship.
