The Library of Hamilton County, Cincinnati, Ohio

This library has a huge collection of records relating to African American history. It has all of the census reports from the beginning of American census taking in 1790. Of special interest to African American historians are the records for 1850, 1860 and 1870. The 1850 and 1860 documents contain slave schedules that list the names of slaveholders and the age, color, and sex, but usually not the names of slaves. The 1870 census records list the African Americans by name. This was often the first time that the last name of many former slaves had been written.

The library also has a huge collection of digitized information. There is also a site on Ohio history and a new Cincinnati Memory Project.
