COLTON - Standing before a packed City Council an emotional Sarah Zamora, the widow of Colton mayor David Zamora was sworn in by Congressman Joe Baca as the new mayor of Colton Tuesday night.

“This appointment to mayor is bittersweet for me. It’s been extremely difficult,” Zamora said after taking her husband’s spot on the dais.

“I knew David for most of my life. We lived together 40 years.” David Zamora died shortly after suffering a massive heart attack while driving back to City Hall from lunch at his South Colton home on July 14. Sarah Zamora, who served on the Colton City Council from 2000 to 2004 and ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2002, was chosen by a 5-1 vote of the city council on the night of August 2 to serve out the three years and four months remaining on her husband’s term.

In a moment of levity, Congressman Baca told the crowd this was the first time he had sworn in a husband and wife for the same office. David Zamora was sworn in December of 2010.

“I am committed to this position and to making decisions that benefit our city as a whole,” she told the audience. “I dedicate my term in memory of my husband,” she said.
