Inspired by the Royal Wedding, Black Voice News is launching a “Show-Off Your Crown” hat contest that will showcase hats worn by women in the local African American churches. This contest will feature Michael Cunningham’s book "Crowns." A quote from "Crowns" says, “… many women match their hats with their pocketbooks and gloves.”
In 1998, Cunningham produced a traveling black and white photography exhibition, Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats. The Smithsonian's Anacostia Museum featured two of the images from the book in its exhibition entitled, locating the Spirit in African-American Art.
To participate in the “Show-Off Your Crown contest,” please submit a jpeg photo with a 100 word bio by June 28th. Three winners will be chosen by our Facebook friends, old and new by liking their favorite photo. They will be allowed to only like one photo per person. Deadline for likes on contestant entries is July 12th and the winners will be featured in the July 14th issue of the Black Voice News. Winners will receive a copy of Crowns and various assorted gifts and prizes. Winners will be featured in the blackvoicenews.com and facebook.
