Juneteenth Celebrated in the Coachella Valley

Community leaders to be honored at annual gala

The month of June is “Hot” and The Juneteenth Committee in the Coachella Valley is hosting a “R.E.D.” hot time Juneteenth celebration wearing “Smart Casual White” creating a blank canvas of creative expression while representing unification with no color lines.

This year’s theme is “R.E.D.” an acronym for Rebuild, Empower and Deliver. Guests will experience a compilation of musical genres from Jazz, Blues, Reggae, Gospel, R&B and Neo- Soul, as well as music videos and presentations on large screen(s). The evolution of music will be promoted throughout the venue in celebration of Black Music Month. There will be VIP seating and general areas inside and al fresco areas overlooking the delicately manicured blankets of green at the recently remodeled Desert Willow Golf Resort, located at 38-995 Desert Willow Drive, Palm Desert, CA 92260.

Pioneer Awards will be presented to honor individuals who have helped to promote the free circulation of ideas and beliefs, stood up against adversity, helped local communities, raised awareness about a specific issue or cause, mobilized to change policy, supported silenced voices, promoted opportunities through education, entrepreneurship, sports, medicine, networking and law, and who actively and consistently advocates for children.

This year’s honorees include: Pastor Rosie Anderson, Janice Harrell, Annette Aviles, Percy “Master P” Miller, Linda Gaston, Cheryl Brown, Troy Strange, Synthia Saint James, Sherri Howard, Eddie Gilreath, Ophelia Lucas-Seals, and Quinton Esgson.

Juneteenth, also known as FreedomDay or Emancipation Day, is an American holiday honoring African American heritage and celebrated by people of all ethnic and racial backgrounds. It commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. State of Texas in 1865. Celebrated on June 19, the term is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth, and is recognized as a state holiday in 32 states of the United States.

The event will enrich visitors’ experiences with a more complete telling of the evolution of African-Americans through black music and exhibits designed to inspire thought, discussion and to empower our community.

Juneteenth in the Coachella Valley is the annual fundraising event for the Family Health & Support Network, Inc. Children's Fund. FHSN a private non-profit Foster Family Agency providing quaility programs and services to Riverside County children and youth.
