As part of The Black Voice News’ continuing coverage of AfricanAmerican firsts, Chief Public Defender, Gary Windom is the first Public Defender for the County of Riverside. He came to this post in September 1999 after serving as Senior Deputy Public Defender in Ventura, CA.
He was a past member of the Attorney General's Task Force on Criminal Justice Response to Domestic Violence.
He was a past chairman and present board member of the American Counsel of Chief Defenders. He was also a past president and present board member of the California Public Defenders Association. He is a vice-chairman of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association and serves in its Defender Policy Group. He is a co-recipient of the 2009 Bernard E. Witkin Amicus Curiae Award.
This distinguished service award from the California Judicial Council is given to non-judges for their contributions to California courts. He graduated from University of California-Santa Barbara and Marquette University School of Law in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
CORRECTION: Boris Robinson becomes Riv. Co. Sheriff's first Black Chief Deputy is incorrect. Chief Oliver Thompson was the first Black Chief Dep. in the 1980's. Chief Thompson retired from RSO and became the Police Chief for Inglewood P.D. He retired from Inglewood and became a professor at Riverside Comm. College in Riverside.
