After having a discussion with a few of my friends I left with some vital information. All three of the men there thought that women read into what they say too much. One said “women can make a whole book out of a sentence.”

They said that we always take what they say and turn it into something completely different. At first I thought, here we go again with the female bashing.

After listening to some of their examples I saw where they were coming from. When I started to think about it, I realized that I do it too. This brought up an interesting conversation between my girlfriends. We all have been suspects in the trial of reading too much into things.

Reading? - Some of us have written our own novels. We’ve done a lot of thinking and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s only because we have to piece together bits of information that is given to us. Consequently, if we come up with a completely different puzzle it’s not our fault.

Let’s look at an example.

Sharon comes home from the beauty salon and shows Keith her new hairstyle.

Inside Keith’s mind - when her hair is down it’s great, but pulled up it looks better.

Keith says: I like it when you wear your hair up.

Sharon hears – I can’t stand it when you wear you hair down.

Keith should’ve said: I love it when you wear your hair down and just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, you put it up and look amazing.

Of course, this is a simple example but it shows the basics. It shows how we women read into what he says, write our own sentence, then we add in variables or subtract the true meaning. As women, we think that if the man would just say everything he is thinking woman wouldn’t have to figure it out. That is, say everything but leave out the “but”. We cringe when we hear “but” replace it with “and” and you should be good to go.

As for us women, we have to learn to take words for what they are. Don’t get it twisted; men are known to read into things too. They just don’t voice it as often as women. For the most part, if men began to tell more and women begin to take words for words, we’ll meet on a common ground. I know it’s hard but you have to give it a shot.
