Pacific Grove

Remember when slumber parties meant sleeping bags, root beer floats, limitless hours of laughter and light-hearted conversation? Life seemed simple, focused on fashion, friendship and the new guy in town.

At the Martine Inn in Pacific Grove, women are rediscovering the enchantment and fresh delight of the sisterhood sleepover. Over this past year, women of all ages have been requesting accommodations for groups of girlfriends - a type of slumber party that requires no sleeping bag.

Courtney Simons, an event planner from Los Angeles, enjoys the girlfriend gatherings as a way to reconnect with friends. “People are so busy these days,” she says. “More women are working and raising a family and simply can not find the time to socialize on a regular basis. So, why not schedule time into your hectic life where you and your also over-stressed girlfriends can get away from life for a day, or a few days, and just relax and catch up with good friends.”

Shelley Goodale, employed by the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley, advocates this growing girlfriend trend. “I haven’t had so much fun since college,” she points out of a recent Slumber Party. “My friends and I had such a blast just hanging out and getting to know more about each other. It was truly refreshing ... something spiritual about the whole thing -- a sense of connection to one another and then renewal of mind, body and soul.”

The Martine Inn is an ideal place for these types of get-togethers, observes Don Martine, proprietor. “Our amenities lend themselves to stylish slumber parties. And our staff makes the whole affair an unforgettable experience for the women.”

The inn offers an ocean view (look directly at the waves crashing against the rocky coastline of the Monterey Bay); an ideal location (walking distance to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row; directly across from the 17-mile Coastal Hike & Bike Trail; views of sea otters, seals and whales); Victorian decor; wood burning fireplaces; superb guest services; breakfast/evening wine and hors d’oeuvres; room amenities (fresh flowers, fresh fruit, and huge bath sheets, lace trimmed linen, bathrobes and hairdryers); Jacuzzi; and a colorfully landscaped courtyard with pond and fountain.

A recently published book, Girlfriend Getaways by Kathleen Laing and Elizabeth Butterfield, suggests that, “if we are to live full, healthy, and balanced lives, we need to spend significant time with other women who understand, support, and encourage us. No one does this better than our girlfriends.”
