"Smart women know haircolor and hair style are as much a fashion statement as clothes," says Kim Whitehurst, Clairol ColorMaster.
According to a survey of more than 1100 women conducted by Harris Interactive for Clairol, 79% of black women agree that changing haircolor signifies a woman is trendy and stylish.
"Women of color have always been at the forefront of fashion trends," Whitehurst continues. "Through the decades, their African, Caribbean and African-American influences have made a tremendous impact on clothing, accessories, hair styles and haircolor.
For Spring 2003, these women will be presenting their latest fashion statement - buttery blonde tones and lots of texture."
Beautiful deep blonde shades in caramels, honeys and golds cast a sunlit effect on African American skin.
Lightening ends after doing an overall darker color creates the same warmth on skintones. Haircolor itself will pump up fine hair, making it appear thicker. And getting a cut with texturizing scissors creates more texture in fine hair and removes weight from heavy hair.
For more complex haircolor/texture combinations, salon professionals are using layers of dark and light colors to create unexpected effects.
"By first applying 'panels of light' to the underneath layers of hair, then using a darker or brighter color on the outermost layers," says Shirley Gordon of Strands Salon in Wheaton, MD and one of the three finalists in this year's NAHA (North American Hair Association) Awards, "we can create dimensions of richness that are attention-getting every time you move your head."
To a lesser degree, you can reverse the panels and achieve the look at home - try making a u-shaped section from temple to temple, coloring the underneath layer with Textures & Tones #2N Dark Brown, then coloring the top layer with Textures & Tones #6RV Bronze.
"The important thing is to be a little bold," concludes Whitehurst. "The upcoming season is all about sass and dash and a little romance, and nothing projects that more than a hair style and haircolor that focuses on color, on texture and on YOU!"
