KCBS-TV Sports Anchor Jim Hill will be recognized for his contributions to the Los Angeles community with the Los Angeles Black Business Expos Lifetime Achievement Award, it was announced today by Harold Hambrick, President of the Expo.
Jim Hill is not only a leader in the broadcasting industry, but a leader in service to his community, said Hambrick. Whether the issue is economic, sports fitness, education or drug abuse prevention, the city of Los Angeles and its people have benefited greatly from Jims contribution of his time and talents. He is very deserving of this recognition.The Expos Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Hill during the Expos Opening Ceremonies at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 28 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Im just a sportscaster. These kinds of things are for people who make contributions greater than what I have, said Hill of being cited for the honor. I get involved with our community and our youth because somebody helped me along. It is incumbent upon all of us to do whatever we can to help our young people, because they have a lot of distractions out there.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Hill has been a sportscaster for 30 years. He currently anchors KCBS-TVs sports in addition to headlining its weekend Sports Central show. Hill has been with the station since 1992, having previously spent four years with KABC-TV and a prior KCBS-TV stint from 1976 through 1987. A former professional football player and a first-round draft pick with the Green Bay Packers, Hill was also an All-American defensive back at Texas A&M.
In the area of community service, Hill is active with several community and sports fitness organizations. He was named a member of the board of directors of the Los Angeles Urban League, the Grossman Burn Center in Sherman Oaks, and Centinela Hospital in Inglewood. He is also on the advisory board of the Boy Scouts of America. Hill is also involved in outreach activities on behalf of the Governors Board for Physical Fitness and Sports, the Presidents Council for Physical Fitness, the United Negro College Fund and for Athletes and Entertainers for Kids, an organization Hill founded.
Its all about helping young people, said Hill. Its not about being thanked, because the kids say it with their eyes and with their smiles. Sometimes we take for granted things that are of huge significance to our youth.
In addition to receiving an Emmy and multiple sports casting honors from the Los Angeles Press Club, the California Associated Press Television and Radio Association, and United Press International, Hill is also slated to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in early 2006.
