God answered their prayers when they entered a contest to win $1,000 towards their down payment and closing costs, and won. The Etheridges, Ricardo, his wife Canti, and their two daughters Kiara and Cayla, can now call their new award-winning neighborhood home.
Our new home is on one of those streets that you hear about. We have block parties in the summer, everyone decorates their home for Christmas, even the mayor attends the neighborhood events, he said as Mayor Ron Loveridge stood in the back of the room smiling.
Homeownership is not a statistical abstraction, the mayor said, its real people.
In the meantime, the Etheridges will soon be moving into their new house. Were looking forward to meeting our new neighbors, he told the crowd gathered at Riversides City Hall.
Ricardo, a professional runner and former Mission Inn Run winner, is a graduate of Cal Baptist University in Riverside.
Councilwoman Nancy Hart, also on hand for the festivities, congratulated the entire organization for their commitment to increasing homeownership in Riverside. Riverside is where we want to make it happen, she exclaimed.
Jerome Davis, RPIH Director of Marketing, noted the enthusiasm and pride in the voices of the new homeowners. Homeownership is the first step to creating civic pride, wealth, and economic stability, he concluded.
RPIH is a chapter of HUDs National Partners in Homeownership.
It is comprised of leaders from the business, school, and real estate communities. Formed in 1994, the chapter has worked with Mayor Ron Loveridge to strengthen its mission to promote homeownership opportunities for low-to-moderate income families in Riverside.
Each year, RPIH, the City of Riverside, the Fair Housing Council, and HUD join forces to present a Homebuyers Faire in Riverside.
The next Homebuyers Faire will be held in Downtown Riverside on October 4, 2003.
