Riverside voters Tuesday handed veteran Ward 4 councilman Frank Schiavone a stunning defeat giving newcomer businessman Paul Davis, a solid victory.

All precincts reporting showed Davis with 52.5% of the vote to Schiavone’s 47.5% of the votes cast in the mail-only election.

Incumbent council members Nancy Hart (Ward 6) and Andy Melendrez (Ward 2) easily won re-election.

“I worked hard for this victory. I deserve it,” said a jubilant Davis.

He said he talked to nearly 7,000 people, knocked on hundreds of doors, losing 14 pounds in the process.

Schiavone pinned his loss on voter complacency.

“It’s a sad day when you see people just don’t care enough to vote.”

Hart and Melendrez said they were happy with the results but disappointed that a mere 23.64 percent of voters  cast ballots.
