Bethel Community Outreach and College Exodus to Health Professions embraced and recognized the first students ever to participate in their summer enrichment program supported by Loma Linda University. Twenty seven students completed a 50-hour week internship program that enables and exposes local San Bernardino county African American students to experience and knowledge in the medical fields.

The ceremony honoring the students took place at the Boys and Girls Club in San Bernardino.  The CEHP program is a comprehensive, three to four year program offered to high school students providing academic preparation and support and exposure to healthcare professions, college applications and college enrollment assistance.

Among the 27 students was Jessica Reliford, who wrote an essay about herself and was selected to join the program.  Reliford will be attending Arroyo Valley High School in the fall.

"The neatest experience was going to different departments and talking to the doctors and nurses," stated Reliford.  She continued, "they answered all of my questions and concerns. They gave me encouragement to keep reaching for my dreams not letting anything stop me.  We also went to the simulation lab and practiced on dummies.  I want to be an OB/GYN doctor. By going to the CEHP program, it opened my eyes to different departments in the medical field that I never knew about."

Assistant Superintendent Margaret Hill, Councilman Rikke Van Johnson and Carolyn Tillman were among the crowd to celebrate the future doctors and to support CEHP's first ceremony.
