Throughout the San Bernardino Unified School District (SBCUSD) there are significant numbers of at-risk high school students. Many of them possess the quality associated with leadership.
The San Bernardino City Unified School District in conjunction with the California National Guard has created a dynamic program for these students to develop themselves.
The program was developed by Superintendent Dr. Arturo Delgado, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Judy White, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services Narciso Cardona, Director of Alternative Programs Dr. Joan Tortorolo, and Major Journal Miller.
The objectives of the academy include: improving academic skills, creating a desire for self improvement, instilling attributes needed to succeed in school and in life, develop leadership traits and reinforcing the concept of accepting responsibility for ones actions.
The Leadership Skill Academy (LSA) is a dynamic multi-faceted program consisting of a five week residential experience conducted at Camp San Luis Obispo in Northern California. The cadets then attended a semester long special instructional program at the Paradigm Learning Center in San Bernardino.
The program combines military style discipline, organization, team work and values. Military cadre assembled as LSA instructors include: Major Journal Miller (OIC), Captain Joseph Alo, Captain Edwin Falcon, Captain Jon Gaede, Cpt. Pernell Johnson, and 1st Sergeant Ionne Barnes-Joshua (SBPD).
Highlights of the cadets journey will be featured in the following weeks editions of The Black Voice News.
