Ground- breaking to Begin for Juanita Blakely Jones Elementary School

The San Bernardino City Unified School District invites the public to attend the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, October 17 at 10 a.m. for Juanita Blakely Jones Elementary School, the second of two elementary schools to break ground this year.


Juanita Blakely Jones, hired in 1948, was the District’s first African American teacher. She began her career at Jefferson Elementary, transferred briefly to the Los Angles Unified School District, and returned to San Bernardino in 1964, where she remained until her retirement in 1978.


During he years with the District, she taught at Jefferson and Belvedere Elementary Schools, served as the director of the Career Opportunities Program, and was the District administrator of Early Childhood Education and Headstart.


Jones was also a member of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors and the author of “I’ve Been Thinking About You,” a book of poetry.

Construction of Juanita Blakely Jones Elementary is scheduled for completion in 2005. The school is modeled after the existing E. Neal Roberts Elementary and will be located at 700 North “F” Street in downtown San Bernardino.
