According to the Bible, elders are ordained to set values, and calibrate the moral compass of the Christian believers. The Bible speaks of elders as men and women of acquired wisdom. Christians are to inherit solid values, which are passed along from generation to generation.  It is the onus of Christian parents to teach their children biblical doctrine. Unfortunately, many in their efforts to be good Christians, sabotage their family relationships because the teachings that were acceptable 2000 years ago are not acceptable in society today. Parent and child relationships, and marriages, for instance, are sacrificed at an alarming rate when modern spiritual wisdom is not applied to early biblical tradition.

There was a time when parents would refer to the Bible as they beat their children. They felt the Bible justified their actions of administering harsh whippings. Proverbs 10:13 says a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding and Proverbs 13:24 – He that spareth the rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. Following such biblical instructions today is considered child abuse and is punishable by criminal law. Many dogmatic Christians have lost custody of their children by blindly adhering to antiquated customs as taught by our elders of yesteryear. Due to this cruelty, many children runaway from home and live on the streets and/or, equally as bad, grow up to practice corporal punishment on their own children. Today the wise Christian understands that a child needs discipline; however, discipline is best administered by teaching and training with care, love, and patience - not by beating.

Much biblical instruction when taken verbatim and dogmatically used is detrimental to marital relationships also. Many women have left marriages when husbands insisted that she had no say so about matters and he was the supreme authority. 1Timothy 2:

11-12 says – Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man but to be in silence. In our modern world women are equal to men in the workplace and society at large or it’s called discrimination to which there are civil consequences, while in the home its called mental cruelty.  Men still practicing such archaic Christian doctrine have found themselves in divorce court.

Until a few years ago, many Christian churches used scripture to prevent women from becoming pastors or ministers. In 1 Corinthians 14:34 it says - Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak. Today, with the application of modern wisdom, love, and understanding many women are leaders in the church.

People of advanced understanding realize that if God can use a rock or a donkey to speak his word surely he can use any human gender of his creation. Many churches throughout the United States have missed out on anointed powerful female pastors and leaders because they were not adaptable to modern Christianity.
