It is a myth that a single mother cannot raise a wholesome son, because with God all things are possible.  The entire chapter of Proverbs 31 was the instruction of a mother to her son, Lemuel. She instructed him to be righteousness and also how to recognize a virtuous woman. The words of King Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him. What, my son? And what, the son of my womb?  And what the son of my vows? Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.  It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink. Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgement of any of the afflicted.  Proverbs 31:1-4. Lemuel is mentioned only in the aforementioned verses of the Bible.

The first things that alerts expecting parents whether or not they are ready for parenthood is their willingness to sacrifice their personal pleasures and put their child’s health, safety, and welfare first. Good single parents will sacrifice their single lifestyle. There are many sacrifices mature parents make that an immature parent cannot conceive.

Recently I saw a sign in a restaurant near the bar area that read:

Notice - If you’re Pregnant, Drinking Alcohol, and Smoking may endanger your unborn child. However, in that restaurant there was a pregnant woman inhaling secondhand smoke and another actually drinking alcohol and smoking. I wondered about their commitment to their child. How much of their personal pleasure will they sacrifice after the child is born?  It occurred to me that none of these women were spiritually ready to become mothers. Giving up smoking and drinking is a small sacrifice compared to what God expects of a good parent.

It is difficult for a person to drop his or her comfortable bad habits and begin new good habits. A concerned single parent should not engage in any negative activity that may influence the children. The offspring had no choice in this situation. Parents owe children the respect and great consideration to provide the best possible living environment. This does not mean a home full of toys but it does mean that parent provide a home full of good moral principles.  Parents cannot use profanity in the present of children and expect better of the children. Parents cannot demonstrate insecurity but expect the children to handle problems maturely.  Nor can parents become hostile in order to enforce rules and expect the children to behave differently.  Parents should take a personal inventory of his or her character and begin to see themselves as their children see them. Children are three times as likely to conform to what they see rather than to what they are told. Suppose for a moment that all children had a choice from God before entering this world to choose which household and family they would inherit. Adults are blessed with a degree of choice as to what type of child they’ll bring into this world. For example, adults realize that if they select a mate of a different race their child will be interracial.  Adults realize that if they indulge in unprotected sex with a drug addict, they risk becoming parents of a drugaddicted baby. Adults have choices about the type of children they reproduce.  If you are a parent, take an inventory of yourself. If God gave children their choice of parents by exposing all potential parents’ character traits to the unborn, do you think your child would have chosen you? Would you like a parent like you? The change begins with you.  Godly children begin with godly parents.
