Mother's Day is here!  So what do you have planned for your mother, grandmother, aunt, god-mother or that special woman who filled the shoes of a "mother" in your life?  In case you didn't know, it is a recognized fact that the busiest day for restaurants is Mother's Day!

Since Mother's Day is supposed to be when we as women are "supposed to have the day off," we often put this task in the hands of the men (and children) in our lives on how we are going to celebrate this event.  It is traditional for many families to attend church and then go out to brunch.  But other options could include breakfast in bed, dinner at twilight, or anything in between.  The key in my opinion is to just ask her what she would really like.  Depending on the day to day responsibilities of her life, she may want to either keep it simple and relaxed, or if she rarely gets an opportunity to dress up and paint the town, she may desire for you to go all out.

Remember, mom's day should not be cookie cutter.  Show her that you put some thought and effort into her day.  Make it an event that she will remember by doing the little things that put a smile on her face.  I'm sure she's not as complicated as you may think or try to make things to be.  Take a little time and just ask her what's important and special to her.

In closing, I would also like to encourage everyone to do something for a mother who may have lost their child to violence, war, accidents or just life.  She may not have that child to reach out and say "Happy Mother's Day" to her, but you can!  So from all of us at PSP - "Happy Mother's Day" to all of the women that are and have ever been a "mom" to a child.

Many of you who read my column know me as an Event Planner.  However, there's another side to me that's near and dear to my heart.  I have a non-profit called "Forgiving For Living, Inc.," (FFL) a 501 (c ) 3 for over 10 years designed to give solutions to individuals with issues of hate, anger, bitterness, and the inability to forgive.  www.forgivingforliving.com.

Forgiving For Living, Inc., was the outcome of me overcoming my own personal issues that started when I was very young.  As a child, I was abandoned by my mother and sexually abused by my father.  As an adult, I came full circle and forgave my parents and actually had a relationship with both of them until they each passed away.  As an adult, I've experienced divorce, overcame cancer while trying to build a business and balance a life as a single parent.

The mission of FFL is to inspire and empower individuals who have experienced abuse, violence, abandonment, discrimination or anything else that causes one to develop low self-esteem.  It is our goal and aim to help individuals with these issues by providing them with tools, resources, mentors and information to make positive choices and develop the necessary life skills to move on.

On Saturday, April 26th, we will hold our very first fundraiser benefiting Forgiving For Living, Inc., titled The PLUS Awards.  The Luncheon will be held at The Beverly Hills Hotel and we'll be honoring six special and unique individuals that have not only achieved in their professional lives, but also have managed to give back and make a difference in the lives of others.  Please join us in paying tribute to Sarah Harris, T.C. Richard, Pat Tobin, Cynthia Busby, Genethia Hayes, Challengers Boys and Girls Club & The Dantzler Family.

We are proud to have Karen E. Hudson as our Event Chair.  We also would like to thank all of our Sponsors that stepped up to the plate for our first year including, Broadway Federal Bank, Danny Bakewell, Jr., Northrop Grumman, Wells Fargo Bank, Nestle U.S.A., Inc., Toyota, The Brotherhood Crusade, Dr. Lauren Walton, Councilman Isadore Hall, Dazzle & Design, L.A. Business Printing, Top of the Line Communications, Inc., SAVE THE DATE Media Group, LLC, Personal Services Plus, Inc and thank you Black Voice News for your support!

I also want to thank our Host Committee for all of their efforts:  Speaker-Elect Karen Bass, Councilmember Wendy Greuel, Councilmember Jan Perry, Constance Anderson, Lois Buckman, Courtney Gladney, Christiane Harris Hills, Sarah Harris, Stacey Stafford, Sabra Waddy, Danny Bakewell, Jr., Eric Johnson, Jennifer Newmark, Mary Ann Mitchell, Daria Le'Sassier, Marilyn McCoo Davis, Sherrylynn Metoyer, Linda Patterson, Barbara Perkins, Brandy Williams, Brenda Ross Dulan, Synthia SAINT JAMES, Ms. Shabazz, Renita Tyson, Portia Cowlings, Amber Carpenter & Juanita Palacios- Sims.

Thank you everyone!

This time of year sparks the thoughts for many companies and or organizations to think about having "Destination" meetings and or events. The dictionary defines "destination" as..." the place toward which something or someone is destined."  What is so attractive about these types of functions is it allows companies to travel, given they have the budget, to exciting places and being able to have a tax break because it is "business."

Corporations often use "destination" meetings as an "incentive" for their employees to push hard throughout the year and have a reward for their hard work.  There are also some community based organizations and or groups, such as the Trumpet Awards (based out of Atlanta), who traveled to Las Vegas for their event one year; and the Ebony Fashion Fair Show that travels around the country raising funds for local charities, to name a couple, who experience "destination" events.

When considering doing an event or meeting outside of your home base, please consider the following as part of your research before jumping forward.

  • Locate Destination Management Companies (DMC's) in the city you plan to visit.
  • If you plan to travel outside of the Country, make sure you research the rules, customs and laws appropriate for that country.
  • Contact the local Convention & Visitors Bureau to find the necessary resources, venues and suppliers you will need to use that are qualified and come with a reference.
  • Another good source to reach out to would be the local Chamber of Commerce.
  • Examine your budget - always remember things tend to run a bit higher than you originally estimate by the time you finish everything.
  • Get a referral if possible for the place you desire to visit.
  • Be prepared for the things that come up that are out of your control (i.e.: Airline Companies going out of business) and make sure you have Insurance and/or a plan B.
  • At the end of the day...do your homework!

Once you've completed all of the above...then get ready to hopefully accomplish your goals and have an "eventful"  time!

Give your all in all that you do. Then the PLUS won't just be more, it will be the difference!
