This past weekend I had a chance to spend some one on one time with my mother (who happens to also be my Chief Operating Officer for my company).  We went on a "mother/daughter" weekend to Carlsbad and stayed at a Spa Resort to reflect and review where we are as a company and to discuss some next steps regarding the business.

While "relaxing"(because of course it is difficult to turn off from work when you run an event management company) we decided to take a quick drive over to the Four Seasons Resort Aviara North San Diego to see what kind of venue it would be possibly for an event.  The property had all of the amenities you could imagine a top hotel would.  While sitting out on the Veranda sipping a nice cool drink, we saw a wedding coordinator setting up for a garden wedding over looking the Pacific Ocean.  As my mother and I sat there watching everything they were doing, she leaned over to me and said "I have a problem with formal events being held out on the grass."  As I pondered her comments, I asked her why?  She said because for a formal affair women wear expensive high heel shoes that will get messed up from the grass (and by the way it totally destroys the grass too!).

Our conversation made me think about several events coming up that are held outside on "the grass."  Yes, it's true that women often mess up their fancy or pretty shoes when walking on the grass, but sometimes there's not a better venue than a rose garden or a view over looking the ocean and feeling the sunshine on your body and the wind in your face.  At the end of the day living in beautiful sunny California, it's hard not to take an event whether it's a wedding, or a garden soiree white linen affair outdoors!  I recommend if you know you're going to be outside and you don't want to mess up your shoes...take a pair of flats that you can change into.  I would love to hear from you and learn what you think about formal verses casual events held outdoors on the grass... wendy@personalservicesplus.com.

WOW...what can I say ?!?! I must pause and recap the historical "Los Angeles Inaugural Ceremony" supporting Speaker Karen R. Bass, the first African American Woman to hold such a position that occurred on June 6th at Los Angeles Trade Tech College.

First, let's review the "venue."  As an event manager the venue or location is always important and critical!  Before this event, I wouldn't have personally recommended, LA Trade Tech on Washington Boulevard, as a first choice for such an affair.  However, the renovated "Grand Theatre" not only has style, but also has a state of the art sound system (that I can't even say is true for some of our top hotels around town!  It holds approximately 1,500 people comfortably and the Courtyard accommodated all of our needs for Registration, Post Reception and the "Meet & Greet."  So on behalf of the entire team, we give a real big shout out to Ms. Roxanne Romo, Civic Center Coordinator for LATTC.  We also want to thank the President of the college for opening their doors to us and rolling out the red carpet!

Second, let's review the program!  Nothing was left out when it came to protocol.  We started with the "Presentation of Colors" by the California Highway Patrol Color Guard.  Next we had the Pledge of Allegiance and Grammy Award Winners Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., sing the National Anthem!  The Honorable Sylvia Scott Hayes, President of the Los Angeles Community College District did the Welcome and we had prayers from the multi-cultural community.  Para Los Ninos gave a wonderful song presentation and various community leaders spoke regarding their relationship with Speaker Bass as well as sharing her "leadership" and concern for the "people" through the years.  The first speaker was Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Executive Director from Community Coalition, followed by Maria Elena Durazo, Secretary Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, Congresswoman Diane Watson spoke and Speaker Emeritus Fabian Nunez rounded out that portion of the program.  The theme that came out over and over was community, mentorship and caring for each other!  The Oath of Office was presented by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Kendall Bass held the bible.  Speaker Bass brought the house down with her "Address" and as she closed the children led her down the isle.

Third, I must give props to the entire team that brought this day together...Speaker Bass' Staff, LA SOMS, LA Trade Tech, various Consultants and Personal Services Plus Event Management Company.  Thank you everyone!

Sam it was great seeing you there taking photos and representing the I.E.!

Most of us are getting those Bar-b-ques fired up to get ready for the Memorial Day Weekend!  This is a very "American" holiday because it marks the remembrance for those who died in service to our country.  Memorial Day was declared official on May 5, 1868 and is celebrated in many ways.  For one, people tend to put flowers on the graves of soldiers across the land and since we are still at war - we shouldn't forget those who sacrificed for our freedom.

On a lighter note, many also see "Memorial Day" as the kick-off of summer! This weekend  also marks the opening of many public swimming pools, fairs, and other outdoor activities that bring families together.  If you plan an "event" around this holiday, remember to keep it light, fun, patriotic (if you want to), and inclusive for everyone involved.  Of course the traditional event tied to this weekend is a picnic in the park or backyard!  So bring your family and friends together, share recipes, family history and a relaxed weekend of fun.

In last week's article I mentioned that I would give more details on the upcoming Los Angeles Swearing In and Gala for Speaker Karen Bass'.  We are still putting those details together - but all of you mark your calendars for Thursday, June 5th there will be a celebration and fundraiser at Sony Studios and on Friday, June 6th will be the Swearing-In Ceremony at Los Angeles Trade Tech where everyone is invited!  I promise I will have more information for you next week!

Have a great weekend - be safe and invite someone over that might not have a place to go!
