We are living in a time when everything is fast-paced or right at our fingertips. We use microwaves to make three minute meals, the internet to do shopping without leaving home, and we even can program our television to pause live events. Every single thing in our lives is easily accessible or instant.

This could be the reason why playing hard to get is looked upon as unattractive.

There was a time in the not so distant past when holding off on someone just caused more excitement. Men and women got a real thrill out of the chase. Finally catching the person would mean that you worked for it and it would be hard for anyone else to obtain that person’s heart.

So, what happened to this work ethic? We are now working harder and becoming more successful than ever; many of us can’t find enough hours in a day. Have an increasing number of hours put into our work week caused the relationship work effort to dissipate? This could be true or it could just be our “need it now” mentalities.

In today’s society, people who just want to take things slow are looked upon as wasting time. I think this is a wrong perception. Taking your time can allow you to see what’s really going on with a person. There will be a lot less “I didn’t know she…” or "I didn’t know he did that”. It’s okay to drag your heels before you get wrapped-up into something. At least you’ll be going in with some insight and not jumping in head first.

I have a friend who rushed into a relationship with a woman he met in April. It wasn’t until three weeks ago that he found out she was involved in some illegal activity. The messed up part about it was that they lived together and had been since May. He very easily put himself in harms way. He clearly didn’t know a sufficient amount of information about her.

All of us need to realize that we don’t need our whole lives to run so quickly. It can be difficult, but we need to sit back and take a breath sometime (in all aspects, not just relationships). We all would love to have what we want when we want it but I think we’d all prefer home cooking to a microwave dinner. That home cooked meal takes a lot longer to make, but it’s always well worth it.

You can’t even get a job without a background check – so you definitely shouldn’t get involved with someone without having them answer some questions. You can’t be worried about making them feel uncomfortable because you could be saving yourself from an uncomfortable or even dangerous situation. Take some time to get to know them; even though it doesn’t seem like you have any.
