The YMCA of Greater New York hosted its annual Arts & Letters auction and reception in October, and raised $400,000 to support the award winning Virtual Y program -- a pioneering after-school program operating in more than 90 public schools across New York City.  James Earl Jones, star of stage and screen and Verizon spokesperson, was honored with the Virtual Y Excellence Award for achievement in the creative arts.

City Manager Promotes Three to Interim Director Positions

City Manager Brad Hudson today announced the appointment of three experienced managers to Interim Director positions.  Deputy Public Works Director Siobhan Foster has been named Interim Public Works Director; Deputy Human Resources Director Rhonda Strout, will serve as Interim Human Resources Director; and Deputy Parks and Recreation Director Kris Martinez will be the Interim General Services Director.  Each will assume their Interim responsibilities immediately.

UCR Creative Writing Professor Awarded

Novelist Chris Abani, an associate professor of creative writing at UC Riverside, is the winner of the the 2005 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for Debut Fiction for his novel Graceland. The Hurston/Wright Legacy Award is the first national award presented to published writers of African descent by the national community of Black writers. Awards are worth $10,000 each and honor books by writers of African descent.
