James Toney will take on Randy Couture
By Jon D. Gaede –
For boxing purists and fans of the ‘sweet science’ everywhere, the blending of the two sports may not be your cup of tea. On August 28, in the Boston Garden, well established journeyman boxer James ‘lights out’ Toney will do battle with mixed martial arts legend Randy Couture.
You may have noticed James Toney the actor, as he played the likeness of Joe Frazier in Will Smith’s 2001 film, Ali. Over the years, Toney has fought in several different weight classes, holding championship belts at middleweight, super-middleweight and cruiserweight.
The 41 year old has amassed a career record of 72-6. Most notable win came over Evander Hollyfield, by decision. He is one of boxing’s tough customers with a reputation of taking hard shots and delivering even harder ones, especially in late rounds.
For Camp Couture, this is a match he should not lose. At 46, most younger athletes wouldn’t try to mix it up in a cage with an accomplished power puncher like Toney, however, Couture is no average athlete. His UFC legacy is secure, although he may recall that boxer Ray Mercer took out MMA’s Tim Sylvia in 9 seconds last year.
Couture has appeared quite relaxed and confident about his chances. He will likely look for the first opportunity to take Toney to the mat, dominate and tire his opponent with holds and then go for the submission. From the stance to the varied skillsets attributed to MMA, Couture appears to possess all the advantages. If the pay per view is significant, we will likely see boxers and MMA fighters tangle again.
