The parities of last week-ends college games were really eerie. The USC Trojans and the UCLA Bruins both had unbeaten streaks on the line, both were on the road, both won in the final offensive play of the game.

The Trojans traveled to South Bend, Indiana to take on Notre Dame for the 77th time. The final drive began on the Trojans 25 yard line as they trailed 31-28 with 2:04 remaining. The key play was a 61 yard pass from Matt Leinart to Dwayne Jarrett. “He checked out of the play and said he was coming to me,” said Jarrett.

With 7 seconds remaining in the game Leinart did a quarterback sneak with help from Reggie Bush who pushed him across the goal line in front a crowd of 80,795.  The victory extended USC’s winning streak to 28 games a solid 6-0 this season.

Bush came closer to staking his claim on this year’s Heisman trophy as he rushed for 160 on 15 carries and 3 touchdowns. He also had 265 all-purpose yards including a dazzling 57 yard run. Jarrett had 4 receptions on the day for 101 yards. Leinart finished the day completing 17 of 32 passes for 301 yards. Steve Smith (Taft) had 4 receptions for 90 yards.

In overtime the Cougars could only manage a 37 yard field goal from Loren Langley. When the Bruins got the ball super-back Maurice Drew hammered his way across the goal line on a one yard run to give UCLA (6-0, 3-0). Drew finished the day with 29 carries for 109 yards and also had 3 catches for 78 yards including a 45 yard pass from Olson. “We do find a way to shut teams down,” Bruin Head coach Karl Dorrell. “We’re just going to work on doing it earlier.”

Jerome Harrison (Pasadena CC), the PAC-10 leading rusher (1001 yards), had an outstanding day in defeat carrying the ball 34 times for 260 yards and 2 touchdowns.
