The college football season is here. Former Culver City High School star Michael Bumpus and the Washington State Cougars will open their season on September 1, at home against Idaho.
The Trojans will travel to Hawaii on Saturday September 3 for a 1 p.m. game while the Bruins will travel to San Diego State for a 7 p.m. game against the Aztecs. Both games will be televised by ESPN2.Bumpus will continue the Culver City High School tradition of having an outstanding player in Division I college football for the pass seven years. Sean Butts (Hawaii), Shannon Harris (Hawaii), Curtis Nettles (Washington State), Karl Paymah (Washington State) and Ryan Riddle (California) are some of the former Centaurs that have been star players on the college level.
Paymah (Denver) and Riddle (Oakland) are rookies in the NFL Joining Bumpus in the college spot-light this season will be red-shirt freshman Jaison Williams. Williams and Bumpus played together four years (2000-04) for Culver. Williams is listed as a second team wide receiver for the Oregon Ducks. At 6-5, 237 pounds, Williams will be one of the biggest receivers in the Pacific-10. Oregon's first game will be September 1, at Houston.
The two-time defending National Champion Trojans are looking to do something no other college football team has ever done, win three in a row. With the talent the Trojans have three in a row is very possible. USC returns Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart at quarterback, Heisman finalist Reggie Bush at running back, and the best offensive line in the nation and a group of great wide receivers.
The only questions the Trojans need to answer is on defense. They need to replace two All-American tackles, several linebackers and a few defensive backs.
The Bruins appear to be ready to take their game to another level. Head Coach Karl Dorrell says he has more depth this season and players that know his system. Quarterback Drew Olson will lead a good offense that will feature running back Maurice Drew and tight end Mercedes Lewis. The defense will feature linebackers Spencer Havner and Justin London. The Bruins also have one of the best place kickers in the nation in Justin Medlock.
