Chargers 42, Raiders 14
By Gary Montgomery
San Diego - The annual Chargers Raider game turned ugly quick. With 11:14 remaining in the first quarter the Chargers scored their first touchdown.
Drew Brees threw a 17 yard touchdown pass to Justin Peelle putting the Chargers up by 7 and essentially ending the contest. The Raiders hung around for the rest of the show but they spent the rest of the day mostly watching Charger recievers run by them on their way to the end zone.
Drew Brees put on an aerial show that reminded Charger faithful of the days of Dan Fouts and Air Coryell. Brees threw passes to seven different receivers.
Brees threw four more touchdowns giving him five for the day. Brees threw for 281 yards while completing 22 of 25 passes and his performance garnered him a quarterback rating of 153.1 and his 88 percent completion percentage is a team record. His five touchdown passes are only one short of the Charger all time record of six held by Dan Fouts.
The quarterback rating of 153.1 is on 5.2 points shy of the maximum achievabale rating.
Outstanding. He came in and did the things you want your quarterback to be able to do...to lead the offense. He made all the right throws. I thought it was a terrific performance for the offense throughout. said Schottenheimer.
The Raiders made it easy. The defense often seemed confused. After several defensive mistakes, there were obvious displays of dissatisfaction from some key players. The offense was even more anemic. Oakland s offense had 28 total rushing yards. Tyrone Wheatly lead all rushers with 18 total yards.
Quarterback Kerry Collins threw for 263 yards on 24 of 39, but he also threw two intercetions one in the end zone.
Im going to keep going, its not going to stop me, weve got to respond and we will, said Collins regarding the critisism of their play. Continued Collins, Its not just one guy, its never just one guy, weve all got to respond.
The fans didnt quite see it that way. For the first time, the Raider fans were outnumber. Which explains why Oakland also had to endure a constaint onslaught of taunts from the fans.
The Chargers are 5-3 and tied with Denver for first place.
Oakland is 2-6 and in complete disarry. Were going to look hard at everything, at guys who competed the way that we want them to or the guys that need to keep playing. If someone backed away and someone didnt compete, then we need to look at it, said Norv Turner.
Even with the Silver and Black playing no where close to their famed legacy, the game still brought out the Southern California version of the Raider Nation. The crowd of 66,210 fans was the fourth largest crowd for the Chargers.
