Riverside - The first meeting between Norths Huskies (4-4,2-1) and the Martin Luther King Wolves (4-4,3-0) was well worth the admission.
J.W. North a perennial football power house, the reigning Ivy League Champion and CIF Division 5 Champion has owned the Ivy League during the past several years.
M.L. King is in its inaugural season in the Ivy League, moving over from the Sunkist League this season after league realignment. King is the districts newest school and has demonstrated a real desire for sports success since its opening.
Both schools were also playing on their home fields, since the two schools share the newest Stadium in the District built Kings Campus last summer.
With bragging rights and league supremacy on the line both teams started out a little shaky. King scored first on a 14 yard pass from quarterback Spencer Pardon to receiver Malone for a 7-0 lead. On the next possession Norths quarterback Mike Clausen completed 10 yard TD pass to Deylan Morrow to pull the Huskies even at 7-7. The teams traded possessions but the halftime score remained deadlocked.
North running back Matt Biggers returned the second-half kickoff 38-yards setting up Norths best drive of the game. The Huskies drove 52 yards in 8 plays to take a 14-7 culminating with a 6 yard run by Johnny Green. King answers in the fourth with a 13-yard TD pass from Clausen to Chris Chamberlain to tie the game at 14-14. Both defenses stiffened and when time expired the game was still a 14-14 tie.
Both teams scored in the first overtime...King on a 6-yard pass from Pardon to Moody and North on a 21-yard run by Morrow.
A 15-yard offensive interference penalty forced King kicker Heidi Garrett to attempt a 49-yard field goal. Her career longest had been 48 yards. The kick was straight but feel short. I wasnt nervous...I hit it good, I thought I would make it. said Garrett.
On Norths next possession Quarterback Mike Clausen rolled right faked a hand off to Morrow and rolled around the left sideline for a 21 yard game winning TD.
I didnt know what I was going to do when we called the play...Its my option. I made the read and saw that nobody was out there, so I just ran it said Clausen.
Norths Deylan Morrow ran for 171 yards and two touchdowns including the 21-yarder to get to the second overtime.
King QB Spencer Pardon threw for 156 yards and three touchdowns.
