Call it small ball, call it Marty-ball or whatever funny adjectives haters happen to conjure up.
But in the end dont forget to call it good. The Chargers are playing good football. The naysayers are disappearing like socks in the dryer. Actually, on Sunday it wasnt readily obvious why they call it Marty-Ball, since Drew Brees threw the ball 50 times. After allowing the Jets to score 44 points two weeks earlier and then last week letting the Rams off the hook, they were back predicting that the Bolts would fade. On Sunday, before 67,160 Charger faithfuls, the Bolts should have proven once and for all that they are a really good football team worthy of their first place AFC West standing. The Chargers matched everything the Niners did all day, right down to the end of regulation and a score of 17 all. The passing yardage was 326-336. The rushing yardage slightly favored the Chargers, thanks to LaDainian Tomlinsons 88 yards which put him over the 1,000-yard (1053) mark for the season. The Chargers rallied from a 10 point deficit to force overtime. After failing to move the ball in the first possession of overtime the Chargers refused to panic. When the 49ers Jose Cortez missed a 41-yard field goal attempt, the Chargers calmly drove the ball 47 yards to setup Steve Christiess 40-yard game winner. The Chargers travel to Miami next to play the AFC East leading Dolphins.
