Senior running back Jonathan Lee and San Bernardino High Schools football team clipped the wings off of the Thunderbirds of Yucaipa High School.
San Bernardino who was playing its homecoming game in memory of longtime supporter, family member Sonny McDowell, who passed away on Wednesday was determined not to be out done. McDowell was the grandfather of two Cardinal players WR/DB Willis McDowell and Donald Brown.
Lee, the Cardinals leading rusher in the game, rushed for 208 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown has filled in the void left behind by Derek Stotts (Northern Arizona). Last year, Lee could have been found running hills for the Cardinals cross-country team.
Willis McDowell and Donald Brown were not going to let their grandpas spirit go down easily, and came up with huge plays against the feisty, but winless Thunderbirds. Willis intercepted a pass on second and goal that was a potential game tier, while Brown caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Gerald Gomez eluding and sprinting past would-be tacklers.
Gomez finished the game going 10-24 for 155 yards. Center, Steven Moorhead told Lee before the game, everyone expects you to get 100, but well block so you can get 200 yards. The Cardinals are now 2-0 in the San Andres League (SAL) and 3-3 overall. The Cardinals can next opponents the Hawks of Arroyo Valley on Friday, October 25 at Arroyo Valley High School.
