Raider alumni gather at local baseball field for charity softball contest

The Inland Division of the California Highway Patrol joined NFL Raider alumni in a friendly, yet competitive, softball game for a local charity. The beneficiary of the event was the CHP’s “11-99 Foundation.” The coded jargon refers to a CHP officer who is in need of assistance. Since 1981, funds have been raised to support families of those officers who have died in the line of duty.

– Let there be no mistake about it, they came to see the King. Labron (King) James that is. The crowd, approximately 16,000 sat quietly as the teams warmed up.

There was a slight buzz as Labron threw one off the backboard and slammed it home, but even with that dunk it seemed as though the crowd was a little reluctant to believe that the kid could be as good as they had been told.

Athletes to compete at the 2003 National Junior Olympics

Rialto, CA, July 23, 2003: Laijon White and Shanice Stewart, members of the Rising Stars Youth Track Club in Rialto, CA, recently competed in the 2003 Youth Athletics National Track and Field Championships held in Buffalo, NY. Laijon took first place in the Bantam Boys (9-10 years) 100 and 200m dashes with times of 13.69 and 28.02 respectively.

Shanice took sixth overall in the Bantam Girls (9-10 years) 100m dash with a time of 14.67 and tenth overall in the 200m with a time of 30.18. Over 2000 athletes competed in this national competition. Both athletes will go on to represent Rialto and the Rising Stars Track Club at the 2003 National Junior Olympics to be held in Miami, FL, July 29 – August 3, 2003.

Laijon and Shanice also recently competed in the USA Track & Field (USATF) Region 15 Championships (Nevada, Southern California, and Hawaii) where they each took 1st in the 100 dash with times of 13.02 and 13.76 respectively. Laijon also took first in the 200m dash with his fastest time this year of 26.39.

Laijon is 10 years old and is currently the nationwide leader in the 200m dash. He has yet to lose a race this year. His fastest times this season are 12.84 and 26.39 respectively, just tenths of a second of the national records of 12.73 and 26.01.

In addition to track Laijon also enjoys football. This past football season, as the star running back for the Rialto Renegades, Laijon scored 36 touchdowns and rushed for more than 2,000 yards leading his team to a perfect 9-0 record. In his spare time he enjoys playing basketball, video games, rollerblading, skateboarding and spending time with his friends.

Laijon is in the 5th grade and attend Myers Elementary School in Rialto. He’s an honor student and has recently received awards for outstanding academic achievement and reading proficiency. While in school, Laijon finds time to play the clarinet in the school band and work as a teacher’s helper.
Shanice is 9 years old and attends Dollahan Elementary School. She does very well in school and her favorite subject is reading.

This is Shanice’s first year running and aspires to one day become an Olympic track star. In addition to track Shanice enjoys swimming, dancing, and helping people. She also sings in her church choir.
