Bethel AME Church Barstow will celebrate their 59th Anniversary on June 6 at 4:00 p.m. as was announced by Pastor Clarence Luckey. Luckey says Los Angeles, Bethel will be the guest church. Pastor, Rev. Kelvin Calloway will deliver the message and his choir will sing.

In the 1940s the church began in a small house on Crooks Ave under the leadership of Rev. Clem Johnson. It was reorganized in 1948 in the home of Mother Dora Porter where the pastor was Rev. G.L. Glascow. During its quest to find the permanent home where it rests today it moved from home to home. When it found its home it was a converted old garage but by 1951 the first small church was erected.

In 1960 Rev. Ben Inghram was assigned to the church and as the church began to grow there were manychanges to the structure and the congregation. He pastored until his retirement for over 40 years, a rarity in the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The City of Barstow, the County of San Bernardino, Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt’s office have been invited to participate in the anniversary celebration.

“The city council of the City of Barstow commends and recognizes Bethel for their wonderful contributions to our community,” said the Proclamation.
