US Holds Annual Kwanzaa Celebration

The Organization Us, the founding organization of Kwanzaa and the authoritative keeper of the tradition, will host a series of activities for the whole family throughout the Kwanzaa season.

Kwanzaa, an African American and Pan-African holiday celebrated from December 26-January 1, is a celebration of family, community and culture. Upcoming events include the following : Umoja (Unity) Night will be held on Thursday, December 26, at 6 p.m. at the organization’s headquarters, the African American Cultural Center, 2560 W. 54th Street in Los Angeles.

Umoja Night includes a candle lighting ceremony and an ingathering of the community where representatives from various community organizations and institutions light the Kwanzaa candles and make positive wishes for the coming year. In addition, warm clothing and blankets will be collected for the homeless.

The Children’s Kwanzaa Karamu, to be held on Saturday, December 28, at 1 p.m. is a feast for the little ones and will include songs, games, African foods and storytelling by the renowned storyteller, Asha’s Baba. The Children’s Karamu will be hosted by the Kawaida School of African American Culture (Us) and will be held at the African American Cultural Center. Please call for tickets and reservations.


The final event for the season, the Annual Kwanzaa Karamu (feast) will be held Tuesday, December 31 from 6-9 p.m. The Kwanzaa Karamu includes the finest of African foods, performances by the nationally acclaimed, Teye Sa Thiosanne African Drum and Dance Company, the annual founder’s statement by Dr. Maulana Karenga, the creator of Kwanzaa, dance, music, poetry, and celebration of the Good.
