The Riverside African American Historical Society and the Martin Luther King Visionaries announce the tenth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Walk-A-Thon.

The Walk-a-Thon offers an opportunity for all citizens of the greater Riverside area to celebrate the anniversary of this great American who distinguished himself as the premier “Drum Major” for peace and righteousness.
The walk will follow Martin Luther King Boulevard to Main Street and it will end at City Hall located at 3900 Main Street near the Dr. King statue. Festivities following the walk will include a special program and presentation of awards to winners in various categories by honorary chairs, Mayor Ronald Loveridge, Rev. Shermella Garrett-Egson, Dell Roberts, and Richard Ramirez.
The Walk-A-Thon whose theme is “The Dream is Real” will be held on January 20, 2003, the federal holiday which marks Dr. King’s birthday. Registration for the event will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Stratton Center at 2008 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Riverside. A $25.00 fee is required of all participants, youths and adults. The Walk-A-Thon will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. at the entrance of the center. All registered participants will receive a Martin Luther King commemorative 2003 T-shirt.
The purpose of the Walk-A-Thon is to celebrate the anniversary of Dr. King’s birthday as a national holiday and to offer an opportunity for all citizens to celebrate the significance of Dr. King’s role in promoting justice for all people.
Proceeds of the Walk-A-Thon will be used for ongoing maintenance of the Dr. King statue and to the Riverside African American Historical Society for a proposed cultural center to preserve the cultural heritage of the Inland Empire African American community.
