Food trucks, rides and activities highlight April 28th event, which is free for UCR undergraduates. A limited number of tickets are available to the general public
RIVERSIDE - Rapper Kendrick Lamar and R&B artist Musiq Soulchild will be co-headliners at the 2012 Spring Splash Music Festival at the University of California, Riverside. Sponsored by the Associated Students Program Board (ASPB), the concert is scheduled from 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday April 28, 2012.
With pop duo Capital Cities and local up-and-comers The Season Finale rounding out the bill, the festival promises something for almost every musical taste.
“Having a variety of acts is really important,” Campus Activities Coordinator Danielle Espino said. “Every year, the ASPB team is working to put on a show that our students will really enjoy.” Rapper Kendrick Lamar, a native of Compton who will also be playing the Coachella Music Festival, recently released his new single “The Recipe” which was produced by Scoop DeVille and features Dr. Dre. he is set to go on at 6:00 p.m.
Musiq Soulchild is an R&B/soul singer from Philadelphia who has released six albums, three of which reached No. 1 on the U.S. R&B chart. His most recent album is MusiqInTheMagiq, released in 2011. He also appears on Robert Glasper’s new album “Black Radio,” singing “Ah Yeah” with Chrisette Michelle. He is scheduled appear at 4:30 p.m. Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian make up the electro-pop duo Capital Cities. Having found each other on Craigslist, they began working together as composers in 2008, and then began producing material as Capital Cities in 2010. Their debut EP, Safe and Sound, was released in June 2011. They played at SXSW in March. They are scheduled to appear at 4 p.m. Hailing from nearby Rancho Cucamonga, The Season Finale was the winner of ASPB’s Battle of the Bands competition last fall. The unsigned five-piece group plays an edgy, upbeat pop-punk. They open the festival at 3:15 p.m.
In addition to the music, Spring Splash will feature several activities including a Ferris wheel, rock climbing walls, human hamster balls. Food will be available from a quartet of gourmet food trucks: Brats Berlin, Calbi Tacos, Rajun Cajun and Crepes Bonaparte. There will also be a beer garden.
“Spring Splash is a student-coordinated event,” Espino said. “Maninder Gill and Lacey Bruins have been working hard in leading the ASPB team to make this event the best it can be for their fellow students. Their ideas, initiative and follow-through have been incredible.” UCR undergraduate students can pick up their free Spring Splash ticket beginning Monday, April 16 by presenting their student ID at the HUB Welcome Desk. Tickets will be distributed Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., or until tickets run out.
A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase by non-UCR undergraduate students beginning Wednesday, April 18.
