The hoopla, chatter, and full-blown excitement settled down to a quiet hush at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills press conference recently as celebrities, Kyle and Chris Massey, Taye Diggs, Tatyana Ali, Michael Strahan and Wanda Sykes took their turns to announce this year’s nominees for the 41st Annual NAACP Image Awards.
Leading the pack was “Precious” based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire. The movie received nominations for director, Lee Daniels, leading lady Gabourey Sidibe, supporting actresses, Mariah Carey, MoNique, Paula Patton, and supporting actor Lenny Kravitz.
Michael Jackson’s This Is It, The Blind Side, Invictus, The Princess and the Frog and celebrities Anika Noni Rose, Sandra Bullock, Morgan Freeman and Quinton Aaron were nominated as well.
The special evening is dedicated to honoring outstanding people of color for their work in film, television, music and literature will air live on Friday, January 26. 2010 (8:00 – 10 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
This year, over 1,200 entries were received to be considered for nomination.
From those entries, a special committee of 300 industry professionals and NAACP leaders from across the country selected five nominees in each of the 53 categories. Any artist, manager, publicist, production company, record label, studio, network, or publishing house could submit an entry to the NAACP Image Awards. The final selections are voted on by NAACP members and winners will be announced during the live airing.
