The Music Center has announced the 96 talented high school student performers chosen as semifinalists for the 16th annual Spotlight Awards.

They were selected from among more than 800 Southern California students who auditioned in the performing arts categories of ballet, non-classical dance, classical voice, non-classical voice, classical instrumental music and jazz instrumental music. Complete list and statistical breakdown follows. For more information, contact Spotlight Director Jeri Gaile at (213) 972-3345 or log on to www.musiccenter.org/spot/

Semifinalists attend a professional master class and compete at auditions that determine the two finalists in each category. Finalists will be announced in March. Finalists will compete on stage at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 17 at the Spotlight Awards gala. Winners receive $6,000; runners-up $3,000.

The Spotlight Awards competition is followed by a gala dinner in the Grand Hall of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion; for dinner ticket information call 213 972-3346.

Begun in 1988, the Spotlight Awards program is a premiere artistic competition for Southern California’s gifted high school students who plan performing or visual arts careers. The program expanded to include a visual arts competition in 1996 and photography in 1999. Those semifinalists will be announced in early March.

Fred Roberts is Spotlight Awards Founding Chairman, Allan Burns is Chairman and Walter Grauman is Creator/Executive Producer, Jeff Margolis produces the Spotlight Awards gala performance.

Bank of America is principal sponsor of the 2004 Music Center Spotlight Awards Program. Spotlight 2004 scholarships are underwritten by Helen and Peter Bing. Additional support for the program has been provided by California Community Foundation, Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation, Eloise C. Goodhew Barnett, Claire and Theodore Morse Foundation, Dorothy Buffum Chandler Program Fund, The Young Foundation, James B. Pendleton Foundation, The Carsey Family Foundation, and Merrill Lynch.

The program is a support project of the Fraternity of Friends, a volunteer membership organization comprised of businessmen and entertainment professionals who support the Music Center. In 1993, the Fraternity began the Spotlight Mentor Program, chaired by Richard Wilson, to pair student finalists with members who provide support, encouragement and direction.
