The harmonizing sextet recently traveled to Washington DC to perform at the launch of www.SupportMusic.com on Capital Hill and speak with members of Congress about the importance of music education.
It was my high school music program that led me to choose music as a career and begin singing with these guys. Now Take 6 is an award winning vocal group known around the world. It shows you what music education can lead to, said Cedric Dent of Take 6. The fellas and I are proud to stand behind SupportMusic, because it may help other kids in school right now fulfill their dreams as we did.
The Music Education Coalition (an organization created by MENC, the National Association for Music Education and NAMM, the International Music Products Association) created www.SupportMusic.com as a resource for parents in the largest grass roots initiative ever in support of school music programs.
Most scientists, parents, educators and politicians recognize the proven positive academic effects of music education on today's youth. However, school boards across the country are facing massive funding cuts and some are targeting music as one of the "extras" that may be sacrificed. Those who want approach school boards and other decision makers to keep music in schools, can visit www.SupportMusic.com.
The innovative web site simplifies the advocacy process by allowing community members to customize campaigns to address specific problems in their school district and present the most effective argument for keeping music education.
The outreach is growing and partners of this new initiative include the Country Music Association, American Music Therapy Association, Association for Technology in Music Instruction, International Association of Jazz Educators, International Bluegrass Music Association, Mr. Hollands Opus Foundation, VH1 Save the Music among many others.
