Saxophonist Premieres New Jazz Suite

Composer and saxophonist Dale Fielder and Group/Force will premiere their “Suite: Clarity” at the Howling Monk Jazz Coffee Bar in Inglewood on March 20, 21, and 22.

Fielder will play alto, tenor, baritone and soprano saxophones for the engagement at the café located at 344 S. Market St. In Inglewood. Information: (310) 671-8351 or (310) 855-0172, www.clarion.jazz.com or www.howlingmonk.com.

Group/Force includes pianist Danny Grissett, a Thelonious Monk Institute graduate who has played with George Coleman and Billy Higgins; bassist Trevor Ware, a sideman to Jimmy Heath and Carmen Bradford; and drummer Thomas White who has played with Clark Terry.

Fielder was born in Midland, Pennsylvania and studied oboe, bassoon, tuba, clarinet, saxophone and composition. He received a bachelor degree in ethnomusicology from the University of Pittsburgh’s Jazz Studies Program. His collegiate and musical mentor was saxophonist and professor Nathan Davis, an alumnus of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

Fielder and his quartet won the Black Entertainment Television’s Jazz Discovery Award in 1999. He won critical acclaim as a composer for his debut performance of “Ocean of Love and Mercy,” an 11-movement jazz suite, in 1996.
