The 67-song boxed set includes songs written over the course of the last two-and-a-half centuries, and recordings dating back to the early 1900s. Included are songs covering virtually every important historical event in our countrys history from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War, and from the Industrial Revolution to Prohibition.
Columbia/Legacy is also releasing a single CD, Freedom: A History of US (Original Soundtrack Recording), which features the key songs from the PBS series.
Freedom: Songs From The Heart of America is produced by Grammy-winning producers Michael Brooks and Steve Berkowitz, along with Grammy-nominated producers Al Quaglieri and Nedra Olds-Neal. The team worked closely with Kunhardt Productions, producers of the PBS series, in finding music that fit the themes of the television series, and, just as important, could stand alone as a collectible bosxed set of recordings celebrating freedom in America.
Featured are well-known pieces of Americana such as The Star Spangled Banner (performed by Duke Ellington), Shenandoah Lullabye (performed by Jerry Garcia & David Grisman) and My Country Tis of Thee (performed by Mahalia Jackson), as well as lesser known songs that chronicle and celebrate dramatic historical events featured in the PBS series -- songs such as Erie Canal (performed by Suzanne Vega & Dan Zanes), Brother, Can You Spare A Dime? (performed by Bing Crosby), and Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit that Ball? (performed by Count Basie.
