This past weekend marked the 11th Anniversary of the Morongo Band of Indians Annual Charity Golf Tournament. Taking place in the city of Beaumont, the event, which was the largest in the decade long history has been instrumental in raising and appropriating funds immediately to an array of local charities and had in attendance well over 300 golfers.

The tournament which offered participants the option of either corporate or individual sponsorship was expected to bring in over $120,000 almost twice as much raised in events past. Surprisingly, two of the prominent sponsors were San Manuel and Agua Caliente. Tournament Chairman Joe Basara says that, "The success of the tournament has to do with the people of Morongo believing that what they have is something that needs to be shared, and planning events that offer them the opportunity to do so." Mr. Basara, who is also the Director of Operations at The Morongo Casino and Spa, further stated,  "the event would probably not have been possible were it not for the generous donations from The Nike Company, Banning RV, and Lumpy's Golf Store of Cathedral City."

The United Way manages the Esperanza Firefighters Assistance Fund, which was one of the four charity recipients of the donations.
The fortunate recipients of the funds are Whitewater Jr. and Sr. High, The United Way Esperanza Firefighters Fund, Ronald Mc Donald House of Loma Linda, and the National Military Family Association and are chosen by the tournament charity committee because of their emphasis on families. Bob Duistermars, President of The United Way is most excited about the tournament timing, as the federal tax amendments added to allow the families of The Esperanza charity to receive tax free donations, expired July 1, 2007.

Roland Medes who is the current principal of Whitewater School, an institution that caters to special needs and at risk youth and allows them to live and study in the same location, says that the monies generated from the event would be appropriated to technological equipment.

With a history of donations totaling over half a million dollars from this event alone, and a host of other activities throughout the year benefiting local charities, Casino Morongo appears to be living up to their slogan of wanting "you" to win, at least as a community.
