African Americans often top lists of ethnic groups suffering from illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.  "Information about healthy living and healthy eating is critical to the African American community," said Dr. D.C. Nosakhere Thomas, senior apostle of Rainbow Community Praise Center International.

The church is offering information about healthy lifestyles during its annual Friends and Family Day, on Saturday, June 16.  The event is co-sponsored by the church and Healthy Fontana. Healthy Fontana is a city-sponsored program, which is the brainchild of Fontana Councilwoman Acquanetta Warren. Warren founded the local program to combat the rising cases of obesity, diabetes and heart disease among young people.

The first part of the event, including Sabbath School, praise and worship service and a sermon from Dr. Thomas, is held at the church.  Music will be provided by gospel singer Sonya Griffin-Lemon, formerly of LA Mass Choir, and Micah Terrell and RCPCI Praise Team. Church activities start at 9:30 a.m.

The second part of the day is lunch, family fellowship and fun activities starting at 3 p.m. at Rosena Park at the southwest corner of Beech and Curtis in Fontana. Activities at the park include face painting, arts and crafts, balloon animals and group games provided by the City of Fontana Mobile Recreation Team.

Thomas says that the event will promote healthy lifestyles and offer information about eating healthy, nutrition and exercise.

"Too many African Americans are dying from preventable diseases," Thomas said. "There are few conditions which cannot be improved or eliminated by a healthy diet and exercise."

Thomas said that Friends and Family Day usually attracts many adults and children from all over the city of Fontana and the Inland Empire.

"We have a lot of new development and new homes in Fontana," Thomas said. "This is a great opportunity to introduce the church to new residents to the community."
