Miller girls win Southern California Regional Semifinal over San Clemente

By Jon D. Gaede

In CIF basketball's State Tournament, the A.B. Miller girls basketball team found themselves in uncharted waters. Playing at home may not have helped because visiting San Clemente brought  several hundred fans who refused to take a seat and chanted for their team all night. The A.B. Miller side woke up just in time to help seal the deal.

A.B. Miller’s sensational freshman guard Chloe Wells scored 25 points and the game winner over San Clemente.
In a see saw battle, San Clemente kept hitting their free throws and had regained the lead with 27 seconds left in the game. Working the clock down, the Rebels went to freshman Chloe Wells. The young guard put on a couple of seasoned moves on her San Clemente opponent, then calmly banked the winning shot for a 44-43 win.

Wells led all scorers with 25 as her sister Lola tossed in seven. A.B. Miller may be the Inland Empire's team of destiny as the Rebels now head to Westwood and the hallowed grounds of John Wooden Court, at UCLA. Coach Mel Wilkins cannot be accused of over-coaching as he let his girls play-out the final half minute without a timeout.

Now 33-2 on the year, the Miller girls will now face their most formidable foe in the power house Long Beach Poly squad. Poly is ranked number two in the State, as they beat a top notch Brea Olinda squad by a basket in the CIF final. The Rebels will have to run an up-tempo game against the Jackrabbits, who are much bigger at all positions.

Southern California championship game will be played all day at UCLA's Wooden Court. The A.B Miller vs. Long Beach Poly tip off is set for 6 pm on Saturday.
