Eddie Dee Smith, 96, was honored by the community for seven decades of community service. The Senior Citizens Center named in honor of Smith was the location where citizens gathered to shoot a video tribute. Smith has dedicated over 70 years of community service to Rubidoux after moving to the area from Oakland in the early 1920s, friends came to honor her at the video shoot. It was themed "Recollections of Eddie Dee Smith" and many came out to honor her. UCR Professor Pam Clute, Rev. Ralph Rivers, Sam D. Knight, Jurupa Unified School District board member, and many others.

Smith has worked in every age category from starting the Head Start, Preschool program to working on the Advisory Council on Aging and getting the Senior Citizen's Center. She has been involved in virtually everything that has happened in the community. She was involved in the Sickle Cell Foundation, the American Red Cross, Girl Scouts, NAACP, North Rubidoux Women's Club, National Council of Negro Women.

The celebration to honor her achievements was held on Saturday, October 7, at Rubidoux High School.  

About 150 people attended a ceremony at the Rubidoux High auditorium entitled "That My Living Shall Not Be In Vain" to honor and celebrate the life and accomplishments of Smith.

"Eddie Dee," as she is widely known, was dressed immaculately  in a pink dress and flower corsage. She was greeted by prominent local officials like Supervisor John Tavaliogne, former Supervisor Donald Schroeder and others.

Arthur Rand, an original member of the Ink Spots, serenaded Eddie Dee during the 2 hour long celebration. Eddie Dee herself  even sang "If I Can Help Somebody" accompanied by Melva Cooke.

Eddie Dee Smith opened her first women's center in her home in 1954, the same year UC Riverside opened its doors to undergraduate students.
