Riverside Opportunity Center to Honor Community Volunteers

The Riverside Opportunity Center will host its annual banquet on Thursday night October 12th at 6:30 pm sponsored by the Premier Service Bank. The banquet honors Riverside role models in ten categories who have excelled in their profession or field of endeavor. Each recipient receives a Golden Eagle Award, and the highest accolade is the "Spirit of Greatness" award. This award has been presented to the Mayor of Riverside, The President of La Sierra University, and others. This year the recipient is 97 year old Honorable Justice John Gabbert. The award given away for journalism is called the "Hardy Brown Golden Eagle Award", and it is given to one accomplished in the field of journalism who has served to make our community a better place for people of all races to dwell together in harmony and peace. Last year, Press Enterprise retired editor, Marcia McQuern was the recipient of this award, and the community award presented by Rose Mayes went to Dr. Lulamae Clemons and Sue Strickland. This year's awardees include: Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship, Lieutenant Alex Tortes, Mr. Maurice Calderon (Ramon Alvarez G.E. Award), Mr. Glenn A. King, Mr. Ali Sahabi, Judge Charles Field, Ms. Susan Lavis-Sturner, and Mr. Rich Ramirez (Bobby Bonds G.E. Award).

The ROC program is a non-profit organization which was founded by U.S. Pastors Association National President, Bishop Dr. Jerry Louder in 1979. The program is known for its having fed more than one million hot dinner meals, provided housing for more than 500, and jobs for more than 800 homeless and near-homeless people since its creation. Today, the ROC is directed by the Reverend Phalia Louder and boasts one of the most influential and community minded board of directors in the Inland Empire. The board not only includes members from the African-American community such as Editor Cheryl Brown, Educator Dell Roberts, Realtor Executive Mike Teer, Councilman Ameal Moore, Clothing Store Owner Louis Louis, RCC Police Captain Lee Wagner and Attorney Jack Clarke, but highly respected community people of all races including: Chairman Henry Coil of Coil-Tilden Construction, Retired UCR Vice Chancellor Dr. Jim Erickson, Lincoln-Jaguar dealership owner Ramon Alvarez, RUSD Superintendent Susan Rainey, La Sierra University President Larry Gearty, Chamber of Commerce CEO Cindy Roth, former Councilman Charles Beaty, Retired County Supervisor Norton Younglove, Mr. Javiar Rosales, Alan Pauw, and Premier Bank President Kerry Pendergast.

Proceeds help the program continue assisting the poor.
