April 21st Grand Re-Opening Celebration is a “Shoe In” to Benefit the Community
The San Bernardino City Professional Firefighters Association, 2nd Ward Councilman Robert Jenkins and the City Parks and Recreation Commission will be hosting a Grand Re-opening celebration for the newly refurbished Horseshoe Pits at Perris Hill Park from 10:00 AM to the early afternoon on Saturday, April 21. The event is open to the public. For many years, the multi-lane, competition-level Perris Hill Park Horseshoe Pits attracted “horseshoe pitching” enthusiasts from as close as across the street to as far away as San Diego. Many regional competitions were held at the Park which brought hundreds of visitors to the city. Unfortunately, a fire in 2010 seriously hindered play at the horseshoe pits. “The fire destroyed their storage shed, tools and maintenance equipment,” said San Bernardino City Professional Firefighters Vice President Steve Brown.
At the suggestion of Councilman Robert Jenkins, the members of the San Bernardino City Professional Firefighters Charity Committee met with the Councilman and the City Parks Commission to plan the restoration of the Perris Hill Horseshoe Pits. The Committee made a donation of $ 4,000 and worked with local merchants and vendors to replace the shed, tools and equipment that had been lost in the fire.
“The $4,000 contribution will replace everything from a new storage facility to weed trimmers, grooming equipment and painting of the grounds,” stated Brown. Councilman Robert Jenkins, members of the Parks and Recreation Commission and City Firefighters invite all San Bernardino residents to join them at the Grand Re-opening Event and Horseshoe Tournament on April 21st to celebrate this new and improved community facility. Firefighters will be grilling up free hot dogs and tossing a few horseshoes with competitors.
